Lower Back Pain and Sciatica
Lower back problems are often related to poor muscle tone in the core muscles.
While some back problems are no better for massage, I've seen dramatic improvements many people's backs, and usually expect to achieve either the removal of back pain and discomfort, or a significant reduction in these symptoms after treatment. A sharp sensation in the lower back, which is triggered by sudden bending or twisting motions is usually fairly easy to rectify. This is usually caused by a subluxated lumbar disc – in other words – a disc that bulges to one side or the other. This can also cause pain that radiates from the back down the legs, and numbness or tingling in the legs and feet. There are a few self-help exercises which are are safe, easy, can be learned and applied at home. |
However, a lower back problem that does not respond to remedial stretching or massage should always be checked out by a medical professional.
Any sensations of numbness or tingling that are continuous, or which worsen over time, should always be taken seriously and properly diagnosed as soon as possible.
I always work well into the legs, buttocks and mid-back, and include quite a bit of gentle passive stretching to help the lower back realign and relax so that pressure on the soft tissues around the spine are relieved..
A regular remedial exercise programme is essential. Pilates, Alexander Technique and Tai Chi are ideal, as are long walks on uneven ground. Gym can also be very helpful indeed.
You may also need to modify your workstation, or your home environment, and avoid movements that strain or injure your lower back.
