Chronic tendonitisThe picture on the right depicts both rotator cuff tendinitis and biceps tendinitis.
This is inflammation or scarring of the tendon or often the tendon sheath. Typically, it hurts to lift the arm forwards above shoulder height, and it hurts to sleep on the affected shoulder. I find that usually both shoulders are somewhat affected, with one being much worse than the other. Massage, passive stretching, and careful management are very important for treatment of tendinitis so that the problem does not get worse. A physiotherapist can advice on the specific exercise that you will need to do for your own shoulder problem. Don't expect a significant improvement in tendinitis from a single massage. This condition is best treated often and over a few months for good results. Once mobility is restored, the ease and comfort of the shoulder should be supported by regular maintenance treatments - once or twice a month, with exercises. |
Shoulder pain and massageShoulder pain is actually quite varied and has different causes and treatments.
When the problem develops is a very important factor in treatment. Acute injuriesIf you have suddenly developed shoulder or arm pain, perhaps after a strenuous burst of exercise or heavy work, firstly, rest the painful area. Do not continue with the activity that caused the problem, and take great care to be sure you are not hurting your shoulder when you sleep.
Apply ice for several minutes every two to four hours. Apply arnica, deep heat or an MSM cream to the painful area. (Do not use arnica on broken skin). See a physiotherapist for a proper diagnosis and treatment regime. It is important to look after your shoulder with care at this point so you can make a full recovery. Massage is not appropriate at this time, just after an injury, although a ten-minute Tui Na treatment combines with Reiki may accelerate the healing process. Anti-inflammatories taken during the acute phase may limit tissue damage - on the other hand, they may encourage bleeding (and therefore bruising) which would be counter-productive. This means that they should be used with discernment. |
